► The origins
Grandpa Luigi and dad Vincenzo have lit the "flame" of the wine in which Antonio after university and after various jobs has poured every effort into atavistic passion for wine, encouraged by Elena Ferrandino, sensitive and caring wife and a woman of great perseverance that, while busy in an onerous occupation, has matured over time the skills that are invaluable to assume a role of advisor today. Her consent is a must because a bottle of wine would cross the threshold of the cellar.
► The Costa Sparaina vineyards
In the city of Barano lies a hilly area to the North-South: Costa Sparaina. This ridge was turned, over the millennia, into narrow and long terraces with the express purpose of cultivating the vine to exploit its natural vocation in wine making.
The Costa Sparaina determines, with its 400 meters above sea level, both sides of the Municipality of Barano in rainfall and therefore two different microclimates which takes advantage of viticulture to diversify wines from identical grapes. The winds are always present on the Costa Sparaina kepping away excess moisture, minimizing medical treatment.
The vineyards are located on the west coast and are 'flooded' by the sun from sunrise to sunset. The selections of wine grapes have to aim to ethereal scents or powerful body.
The restoration of the vineyards, started in 1995 by Antonio, was possible having found locally ungrafted vine, survivors of the fire, on time every year. So historical wines have re-come to light such as the natives Biancolella and Forastera with gold grapes.
The planted area is about one hectare on over three acres of property.
► The cellar
The recent renovation has respected the old construction methods with the remake of "parracine" in lava rock. Intact the millstone used until the end of 1800.
The cultivation has uncovered a millstone of age prior to that one stored in the cellar with a "Pietratorcia" for marc pressing.
Wines from selection of grapes by Mattera's vineyards are now assembled with the criteria tested. Total production is about 5000 liters.
